Applecross House

A picturesque white-harled mansion set behind Applecross Bay in Wester Ross, Applecross House is located a mile (1.6 km) northeast of the village of Applecross. Built in 1675 for the Mackenzies of Applecross, the house was reworked in the mid-18th Century to create a three-storey main block with an additional floor at attic level. Single storey wings were added to the west and east and a somewhat incongruous porch built on the front in the 19th C. The house served as a hunting lodge which was purchased by the Wills family, of tobacco fame, in 1900. The estate includes much of the Applecross Peninsula, extending to 28,328 ha (70,000 acres). Both house and estate are now the property of the Applecross Trust, a charity created by the Wills family in 1975 and committed to conservation and sustainable management of the landscape. The land was opened to the public in 1997.

The walled garden fell into disuse following World War II but was restored in 1981 and now includes a cafe-restaurant.
