A red granite mountain range in the E Grampians, Bennachie rises to a height of 528m (1733 feet) at Oxen Craig 5 miles (8 km) west of Inverurie in Aberdeenshire. The range also includes the other distinctive tor peaks of Watch Craig and the Mither Tap. The Mither Tap o' Bennachie (518m / 1698 feet) is flanked by a a stone-walled fort dating from the Iron Age. In the late 1970s, a new mineral -Macaulayite - was discovered in weathered granite at Pittodrie, on the northeast slopes of the Bennachie.
