Kelburn Castle

Situated 2 miles (3 km) south of Largs at the settlement of Fairlie in North Ayrshire, Kelburn Castle was erected in 1581 by John Boyle, whose family has owned Kelburn since 1140. Built as a Z-plan tower house it has had many additions: the entrance hall and wing from 1700, the Victorian wing of 1879 and the Victorian dining room with its views to Great Cumbrae. Today the castle is part of the larger Kelburn Country Centre which includes a museum, exhibitions, woodland walks and an animal centre. The Boyle family became the Earls of Glasgow in 1703.
