Harris, Sound of

A substantial channel between South Harris and North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, the Sound of Harris is approximately 8 miles (13 km) in width. It provides the only passage within the Hebridean archipelago from the Atlantic Ocean to the Minch. A vehicle ferry crosses from Leverburgh in Harris to the island of Berneray, which is now connected to North Uist by means of a causeway. Of the considerable number of islands in the sound, the largest are Berneray, Pabbay, Ensay and Killegray.
