Arisaig

A district of South Morar, SW Highland Council Area, Arisaig forms a peninsula that extends into the sea to the south of Mallaig. Its coast has fine sandy beaches and its chief settlements are the townships of Arisaig, Back of Keppoch, Portnaluchaig, Morroch, Rhumach and Druimindarroch. The peninsula has many associations with St Maelrubha and Prince Charles Edward Stuart who landed at Loch nan Uamh in July 1745 and eventually escaped back to France from there in 1746. During the Second World War, this area was used as the training ground for secret agents to be dropped in occupied Europe and commandos trained just to the east.
