Lochar Moss

An area of low flat land in Dumfries and Galloway, Lochar Moss lies in the valley of the Lochar Water to the east of Dumfries. It stretches from Locharbriggs in the north to the Solway Firth in the south. and is between 2 and 3 miles (3 and 5 km) wide. The first civil engineering project of John Smeaton (1724-92), designer of the Eddystone Lighthouse, was the drainage of Lochar Moss. Subsidiary mosses within Lochar Moss, include Holmhead Moss, Ironhirst Moss, Racks Moss and Craigs Moss, many of which are now planted with commercial forest.
