Ord of Caithness

Located on the eastern coastline of Highland Council Area, 2 miles (3 km) northeast of East Helmsdale, the Ord of Caithness lies on the boundary between the old counties of Sutherland and Caithness. The Ord comprises a low granite mass rising to 198m (652 feet), steeply above the sea at Ord Point, a headland on the coast. A viewpoint lies on the A9 trunk road which follows the contours across the steep slopes. Until 1811, this road ran along the top of the cliffs to the southeast and was regarded as the most dangerous routes in Scotland.
