General Roy Birthplace Monument

A roadside monument located at Miltonhead, 1¼ miles (2 km) west of Carluke in South Lanarkshire, which commemorates the birthplace of the surveyor and map-maker Major-General William Roy in 1726. The memorial takes the form of an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar, set at a height of 155m (508 feet), with a plaque which reads:

"Here stood Miltonhead the birthplace of Major General William Roy 1726-1790 from whose Military Map of Scotland made in 1747-1755 grew the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain."
