Peffermill

A district of Edinburgh lying immediately to the southeast of Prestonfield and to the west of Craigmillar. Here is the 17th Century Peffermill House, the playing fields of the University of Edinburgh, the Nairn-Simmers biscuit and oatcake factory which was established in 1935, and an industrial estate, which includes the sizeable Scottish Ambulance Service depot for South East Scotland. Immediately to the northeast Peffermill House once lay a threshing mill with its associated mill pond, fed by the Braid Burn. Between Peffermill and Craigmillar is another Peffermill House, a multiple-storey public housing block dating from the 1960s, alongside its twin Craigmillar House. Both the Braid Burn and the Southern Suburban Railway line run through Peffermill.
