A mixed industrial-commercial-residential district of W Edinburgh, South Gyle lies between Gogar Roundabout and Broomhouse, 4½ miles (7 km) west southwest of the city centre. The area takes its name from a farm once located between the present-day South Gyle Broadway and South Gyle Mains. To the northwest is the enormous Gyle Shopping Centre, with the remainder of the area divided between high-density private housing adjacent to Gogarloch, built c.1990, and the South Gyle Industrial Estate, which is older than Edinburgh Park to the west. Scottish Brewers was based here until it was dissolved following the takeover of its parent Scottish & Newcastle Breweries by Carlsberg-Heineken in 2008. Another former S&N subsidiary, Scottish Courage, remains here. A notable landmark was the English Electric Lightning aircraft mounted on a plinth outside the former Ferranti Defence Systems plant in 1990. On the closure of this plant in 2005 the aircraft, which had been built for the Royal Saudi Air Force in 1968, was given to the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum. The University of Edinburgh maintains an off-site library storage facility at South Gyle. South Gyle Station is a commuter halt on the East Coast Main Line between Haymarket Station and the Forth Bridge.
