Ward Hill

The highest point in Orkney, Ward Hill lies at the northern end of the island of Hoy, rising to a height of 479m (1578 feet). There is an Ordnance Survey primary triangulation pillar close to the summit which was installed 1948-49. The geology is Old Red Sandstone of Middle Devonian age (390 million years). There is another Ward Hill which represents the highest point on South Ronaldsay 16 miles (26 km) east southeast.
