Castlecraig
(Castle of Craighouse)

The site of a former stronghold of the Urquharts on the Black Isle, Highland Council Area, the ruins of Castlecraig overlook the Cromarty Firth opposite Evanton. Known originally as the Castle of Craighouse, it was for a while the principal residence of the Bishops of Ross. After the Reformation, it is said to have been occupied by Donald Monro, at one time Archdeacon of the Isles and author of 'A Description of the Western Isles, 1547', the earliest personal account of the Isles on record. It was abandoned around 1640.
