St John's Loch

A shallow loch in N Caithness, St. John's Loch is located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) north northeast of Dunnet and a half-mile (1 km) south of Brough. It extends to 79 ha (193 acres) but is rarely deeper than 1.8m (6 feet). The loch supports a popular trout fishery, managed by the St. John's Loch Improvement Association, a non-profit making body formed in the 1960's with the aim of improving the loch and its surroundings. The association opened a hatchery in 1995 ensuring a continued supply of brown trout to the loch.
