Drumochter, Pass of

Located 5 miles (8 km) south of Dalwhinnie, Drumochter Pass represents the highest point on both the A9 road and the railway on the route from Perth to Inverness. In fact, at 452m (1484 feet), Drumochter Pass is the highest point on any railway in Britain. At one time, two engines were required to haul trains to the summit and the speed was sufficiently slow that many of the passengers would alight from the train and walk to the summit.
