Ardchattan

A parish in the Lorn district of Argyllshire, Ardchattan lies to the northeast of Oban by Loch Etive. It contains 14 'Munro' summits, the highest being Ben Cruachan and on the north shore of Loch Etive are the remains of a Valliscaulian priory founded in 1231 by Duncan Macdougal of Lorn. Robert the Bruce is said to have held a parliament here in 1308, the last in which business was conducted in the Gaelic language, and Cromwell's soldiers burned the priory in 1654. The priory is surrounded by 1.6 ha (4 acres) of garden.
