Affleck Castle
(Auchinleck Castle)

Located just to the west of Monikie (Angus) and 4 miles (6.5 km) north of Monifieth, Affleck Castle is said to be one of the finest surviving tower houses in the country. This L-plan tower was built around 1460. It comprises thick walls supporting four-storeys topped by a garret which is surrounded by a parapet. For a time known as Auchinleck Castle, Affleck was originally home to the family of the same name, who were closely associated with the Lindsay family. In the 17th C. the castle passed to the Reids, but they forfeited the property in 1746 as they had been Jacobites. The castle has been unoccupied since c.1760, when a new house was built nearby.

Press reports in 2004 indicated that Holywood actor Ben Affleck believed this castle belonged to his ancestors.
