Forbes Fountain

A peculiar fountain located on Ladies Walk on the right bank of the River Ness, the Forbes Fountain lies a half-mile (1 km) south of Inverness town centre. Presented to the town by Dr G.F. Forbes, the fountain was constructed 1879-82 in front of the Town House, but was later moved to its present location. Built from pink and grey granite, the lower basin lies at the centre of four massive buttresses. The upper basin is supported on four columns. Its massive form is explained by the fact that it once had a substantial stone canopy which rose from the buttresses.
