One of the three peaks of the Beinn a' Ghlo massif, Carn Liath rises to a height of 976m (3202 feet) 4½ miles (7 km) northeast of Blair Atholl in Perth and Kinross Council Area. This is the first Munro peak encountered when driving north into the Highlands from Perth along the A9 Trunk Road. Its name is derived from Gaelic for 'grey hill' and there is an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar close to the summit. There is a mountain Carn Liath-bhaid 14 miles (22 km) to the north northeast, and another Carn Liath 18 miles (29 km) to the north northeast.
