Somerset Park

A football ground in the N of Ayr in South Ayrshire, Somerset Park lies a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northeast of Wallacetown and a similar distance northeast of Ayr Racecourse. Built in 1888 by the former Ayr Football Club, who merged in 1910 to form Ayr United, a club that remains based here. The ground has been subject to significant redevelopments at various stages; in 1896 it was realigned and enlarged, with the addition of an athletics track. The ground was realigned once again in 1924 and a new stand provided. In the 1970s part of the terracing was covered and floodlights installed, while the main stand was extended in the 1990s. Despite a record crowd of 25,225 on 13th September 1969 for a match against Rangers, the modern capacity is a more modest 10,185, of which 1,597 is seated. Plans for a new all-seated stadium have failed to materialise.
