Neilson's Monument

Neilson's Monument is a substantial obelisk at the summit of Barstobrick Hill in Dumfries and Galloway, located a half-mile (1 km) south southwest of Bargatton Loch and 2 miles (3 km) north of Ringford. It is dedicated to James Beaumont Neilson (1792 - 1865), who invented the hot-blast process of iron-making and once owned the Queenshill Estate on which the monument stands. The monument reaches 10.6m (35 feet) in height and was erected in 1883 by Neilson's son, Walter Montgomerie Neilson. A visitor centre below at Barstobrick interprets both the monument and the Iron-Age hill fort which surrounds it.
