St Patrick's Chapel

A ruined monastery on the Kenavara headland in the extreme southwest of the island of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides, St. Patrick's Chapel lies 1¼ miles (2 km) west of Balephuil and may date from as early as the 7th C. It is believed that St. Comgall, a follower of St. Columba, dedicated this chapel to St. Patrick. Within the chapel, two cross-slabs and the remains of an altar survive. Adjacent are traces of structures thought to be monastic cells and the complex is surrounded by an enclosure wall. Nearby there is an ancient well with water which was said to have healing powers. The site is designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
