The Cioch

(Cioch Buttress, Cioch Pinnacle, Coich)

A unique rock pinnacle which juts out from the cliffs on the north side of Sron na Ciche on the western side of the Black Cuillin in Skye, The Cioch (meaning 'breast' in Gaelic, also known as the Cioch Pinnacle or Cioch Buttress) is located 2 miles (3 km) east of the head of Loch Brittle. It was first climbed by Norman Collie (1859 - 1942) and John Mackenzie (1856 - 1933) in 1906 and given its name by Mackenzie. It is erroneously recorded as 'Coich Buttress' on editions of the 1:25,000 scale Ordnance Survey map. The Cioch has featured as a backdrop in the film Highlander (1986).
