Shetland College UHI

The most northerly higher education establishment in the UK, Shetland College UHI is based at Gremista, 1¼ miles (2 km) north northwest of the centre of Lerwick. Founded in 1970, Shetland College is now part of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), with 246 students in 2012. The library, canteen and Textile Facilitation Unit (TFU) are found at Gremista, all of which are open to the public. The TFU uses high-tech equipment in the design and manufacture of knitted textiles and represents a partnership with the local knitting industry to develop traditional skills and address gaps in the local labour market. This campus is also the base for Business and Management, Community Learning, Computing, Construction, Counselling, Creative Industries, Health and Care, Heritage and Hospitality and Tourism. Curricula offered include school certificates, vocational qualifications, intermediate national qualifications, undergraduate and Masters-level degrees. The Gremista building was extended 2012-13 at the cost of £4.6 million. The Health and Care SVQ Centre is located at Gutter's Hut on the North Ness Business Park, the Hospitality section's kitchens are at the Bruce Hostel in Gressy Loan, once part of the Anderson High School, and Blyde Haven Nursery, established for the use of staff and students, is also to be found in Gressy Loan. The College also operates a community learning centre in Lerwick and learning centres with computer and video conferencing facilities distributed around the Shetland islands at Baltasound on Unst, Symbister on Whalsay, at Ness in the South Mainland, Brae in the North Mainland, and Aith and Walls in the West Mainland. Research activity tends to focus around archaeological investigations under the auspices of the Heritage Section. The College collaborates with another UHI partner, the NAFC Marine Centre at Scalloway.
