The most northerly leisure centre in the UK is located at Baltasound on the island of Unst in Shetland. Unst Leisure Centre opened in 1988, one of a standard model built across Shetland funded by the benefits of the oil industry. The architects were Newcastle-based Faulkner Browns. It includes a 12.5 by 5m pool with small lagoon, games hall, squash court, fitness suite, community room, viewing balcony and pool tables, with a multi-court, full-size grass football pitch and training pitch outside.
It is run by the Shetland Recreational Trust and was built with funds from the Shetland Charitable Trust that was responsible for distributing the Disturbance Receipts, which were intended to compensate the people of Shetland for siting the oil terminal at Sullom Voe.
