Canada Hill, Rothesay

A steep summit located at the centre of a headland which terminates at Bogany Point on the east coast of the Isle of Bute, Canada Hill (recorded on the Ordnance Survey map as Common Hill) rises to 132m (433 feet) ¾ mile (1.2 km) east of the centre of Rothesay. It gained its name because families would stand here to wave to their loved ones who were emigrating to Canada on ships departing from the Clyde. There is an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar located at 128m / 420 feet, a short distance to the southwest of the summit. The Serpentine climbs its western slopes, while woodland and a golf course occupy its summit.
