One of the Eildon Hills in the Scottish Borders, Eildon Hill North rises to 404m (1325 feet) a half-mile (0.8 km) northeast of Eildon Mid Hill, a mile (1.5 km) southeast of Melrose and a similar distance southwest of Newstead. The double embankments of an enormous Iron Age hill-fort surround the flat summit, which was also the site of a Roman Signal Station undoubtedly associated with the nearby fort at Newstead. The hill-fort is the largest in Scotland, extending to 15.8 ha (39 acres), and may have been begun as early as the Bronze Age but was certainly re-occupied and reconstructed in several phases. There is evidence of hundreds of huts having been contained within its walls, with a resident population that may have peaked in the thousands. A series of excavations have revealed many artefacts.
