Mucklaberry Tower

(Mucklaberry Castle, Vaila Tower)

A B-listed folly located prominently on a headland in the northwest of the island of Vaila (Shetland), Mucklaberry Tower (also known as Mucklaberry Castle or Vaila Tower) lies a quarter-mile (0.4 km) west of Vaila House. This two-storey white-harled building features a crenellated parapet with a circular turret at its northeast corner. Thought to represent an ancient watch tower, it was restored in the 1890s by the island's owner, the Yorkshire mill-owner Herbert Anderton.
