Sanctuary

(Sanctuary Road End Sculpture)

One of the Road End Sculptures which are distributed across the Uists, Sanctuary is a bronze mounted on natural Lewisian Gneiss boulder that was created by artist Roddy Mathieson in 2000. It occupies a dramatic location at Sidinish, on the southern shore of Loch Eport on the east coast of North Uist, overlooking a spectacular landscape across Loch Obisary to the mountains of Eaval and Burrival. The sculpture takes its inspiration from this island landscape, with echoes of the ribs of a boat and the flight of swans which gather regularly on the surrounding lochs. Its rich turquoise patina coordinates with the colours of the sea, sky and heather moorland. The work was commissioned by Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre in Lochmaddy and forms part of the Uist Sculpture Trail.
