Bonnie Wee Well

(MacDonald's Fountain)

A monument at Macdonald's Rest on the east side of the B775 road, within the Gleniffer Braes Country Park, the Bonnie Wee Well is a memorial to the poet Hugh MacDonald (1817-60), taking its name from the title of one of his poems. Formally known as the MacDonald's Fountain, the original monument was erected here by the Glasgow Ramblers' Club but it was moved to Glasgow Green in 1881 because of vandalism. The Paisley Old Weavers' Society then raised funds for a new memorial, which was unveiled on the 8th of September 1883, in front of a crowd of several thousand. This was the work of the sculptor John Gordon (1835 - 1912), with a bronze portrait medallion by John Mossman (1817-90) who had created the original monument. It was B-listed in 1980.
