Hillwood Quarry

A sizeable quarry which has removed the western flank of North Platt Hill, to the southeast of Newbridge in the W of the City of Edinburgh Council Area. Hillwood Quarry represents a massive extension of smaller quarries that existed in the 19th C. which has completely removed Hillwood Farm. It is now constrained between by the M8 motorway to the south and west, and the Edinburgh-Glasgow mainline railway to the north, and the policies of Norton House to the east. Here whinstone (dolerite) was extracted to be used as road metal. While the lower levels of the quarry are now flooded, its is still owned and operated by Lafarge Tarmac.
