Drone Hill Wind Farm

A power generation site on Coldingham Moor in the NE of the Scottish Borders, Drone Hill Wind Farm straddles the A1107 road 2½ miles (4 km) northeast of Grantshouse and 5 miles (8 km) west of St Abbs. Operational since August 2012, this wind farm comprises 22 Nordex N60 turbines, five to the north of the road and fourteen to the south, each producing 1.3 MW of power, which gives a total capacity for the site of 28.6 MW. The turbines measure 46m (150 feet) in height to their hub and a further 30m (98 feet) to the blade tip. Construction included 3¾ miles (6 km) of access roads and a similar distance of electrical cabling. Originally developed by US-based AES Corporation, Drone Hill has purchased by Greencoat UK Wind in 2014, along with the North Rhins Wind Farm in Dumfries and Galloway. A fund which benefits the local community receives at least £40,000 annually for the operating life of the wind farm.
