A twenty-six turbine wind farm extending over the mountains between Glen Garry and Glen Moriston, 4½ miles (7 km) north northwest of Invergarry and 6 miles (10 km) west Fort Augustus in Highland, Millennium Wind Farm was built in two phases 2006-08 and 2009-11. Centred around Mam a' Chroisg, the farm is located on heather moorland belonging to the Achlain and Aberchalder Estates at a height of between 650m (2132 feet) and 700m (2296 feet) making this the highest wind farm in Great Britain. The first phase comprised 20 German-built Nordex turbines which, together with their support towers, were delivered by sea to Kyle of Lochalsh, Corpach and Invergordon and then moved to site by road. Sixteen of these turbines are mounted on 70m (230 feet) towers, with blades which are 90m (295 feet) in diameter, giving a total height to blade tip of 115m (377 feet). A further four turbines were mounted on 80m (262 feet) towers, but with the same blade dimensions, giving a total height to blade tip of 125m (410 feet). Each tower base comprises 320 cu. m of concrete and the first phase also necessitated the construction of a new 132 kV sub-station and 7 miles (11.5 km) of access road. The second phase comprise six additional turbines of the same dimensions. All of the installed turbines produce 2.5 MW of electricity, giving the site a total peak generation capacity of 65 MW.
The project was developed by RDC Scotland and West Coast Energy Ltd., with work undertaken by Dingwall-based contractor R.J. McLeod Ltd. The wind farm is owned and operated by Millennium Wind Energy Ltd., which is a subsidiary of Falck Renewables Plc. A co-operative was established in 2008 to allow local people to invest in the project and a community trust fund also distributes grants of up to £100,000 per year to benefit the local community for the lifetime of the wind farm.
The Copenhagen-based investment fund PensionDanmark took a 49% share in this wind farm in 2014.
