Atlantis Leisure Centre

A community-run sports facility on Dalriach Road in Oban, Atlantis Leisure Centre provides a 25m swimming pool with flume, a trainer pool, six-court sports hall, five tennis courts, two squash courts, a gym, dance studio, spin studio, bouldering wall, three-storey soft play and climb cube and a sauna, together with a café and function room.

The centre began as an Argyll & Bute Council swimming pool, but was taken on by an enthusiastic group of local volunteers in 1992 and now operates as a charity, the Oban and Lorn Community Enterprise Company, run by a volunteer board of directors. A rebuilding programme of 1997-98 added the sports hall, café, gym and health suite. Subsequent improvements have included the addition of an all weather five-a-side pitch, the soft play cube, together with a pool plant upgrade and a new biomass boiler.

Capital funding for these developments came through local fundraising, the National Lottery and the North British Hotels Trust community fund, while ongoing financial assistance is provided by Argyll & Bute Council, and Highlands & Islands Enterprise.

The tennis and squash courts were first developed by the Oban Tennis and Squash Club and leased to the Atlantis Leisure Centre in 1994, which now provides the club with a base and maintains the facilities. The Centre also provides a base for the Oban Otters swimming club, founded in 1975.

The community ownership model for leisure demonstrated here has been held up as a model across Scotland.
