Dun Bhuirg

(Dłn Bhuirg, Dun Cul Bhuirg)

A modest Iron-Age hill fort located on a rocky knoll overlooking the west coast of Iona in Argyll and Bute, Dun Bhuirg (or Dun Cul Bhuirg) is situated 1¼ miles (2 km) west northwest of Baile Mor. Thought to date from around 100 BC to 200 AD, this is the only hill fort on the island. Its position gives natural protection, but it was further defended by banked enclosure, sections of a which remain visible. Excavations in 1957-59, and again in 1969, revealed the foundations of a small circular house with a central stone-built hearth, together with pottery sherds.
