Aboyne Airfield

A glider strip which lies on the southern side of the A93 road on Deeside in Aberdeenshire, Aboyne Airfield is located 2 miles (3 km) west of the town. Situated on the Dinnet Estate, the airfield is home to the Deeside Gliding Club, which was founded in 1952, and comprises a pair of tarmac runways. Owing to its proximity to the Cairngorm Mountains, soaring conditions here are excellent, with a glider launched from Aboyne Airfield setting the UK altitude record of 11,765m (38,600 feet) in 1995. Another record was set in 2012, when a temperature of 22.9°C was measured - a Scottish record for the month of March.
