Cumbernauld Theatre

(Cottage Theatre)

Cumbernauld Theatre is located in Kildrum, a mile (1.5 km) northeast of the town centre, on the edge of Cumbernauld House Park. Founded in 1960 as the Cottage Theatre, it occupies a row of cottages which were once part of Braehead Farm but now located next to the A80 road. When the New Town was built, various cultural facilities were planned in Cumbernauld Town Centre, but these either took time or never materialised. The building was extended in the 1970s and now comprises a fully-accessible 258 seat theatre, with a three-sided stage thrust into the audience.

In 1978, the Cumbernauld Theatre Trust created the commercial Cumbernauld Theatre Company to manage the arts centre and to create new professional productions. In 2014, the Trust and North Lanarkshire Council announced plans for a new 400-seat theatre to become part of new Cumbernauld Academy campus a half-mile (1 km) to the south.
