Occupying a sloping site which descends from Cumbernauld Village to Vault Glen in North Lanarkshire, Cumbernauld House Park lies a mile (1.8 km) northeast of the town centre. It extends to 19 ha (47 acres) around the Classical mansion which is Cumbernauld House. This is the largest park within the boundaries of the New Town and includes a number of paths which are popular with dog-walkers. There are also interpretation panels which explain the history of the area.
The 14th C. Cumbernauld Castle once stood within the park, but was demolished in the 18th C. with some of its stone used to build the current house. A mote remains in the northeast of the park, with Cumbernauld Glen Nature Reserve beyond. There is also an area of allotments.
There are interesting specimen trees, including Queen Mary's Tree which is said to have been planted in 1562 by Mary, Queen of Scots, together with recent wildflower planting. Wildlife includes squirrels, bats and roe deer. An annual cross-country event is held here at the end of October. The Friends of Cumbernauld House Park are a dedicated group of local people who work to protect and improve the park.
