Cairn Hill

A teardrop-shaped summit in The Machars of Galloway, Cairn Hill rises to 93m (305 feet) a quarter-mile (0.4 km) south of Appleby and 2¼ miles (3.5 km) west of Whithorn. This is a good example of a drumlin, one of many in this area deposited beneath an ancient ice sheet and aligned NE-SW suggesting the direction of flow. There are other Cairn Hills located just 2¼ miles (3.5 km) to the north, 3¾ miles (6 km) to the north northeast and 5½ miles (9 km) to the northeast.
