Inner Wood Hill

(Wood Hill)

A teardrop-shaped summit in The Machars of Galloway, Inner Wood Hill rises to 62m (203 feet) to the north of the Dowalton Burn, 2½ miles (4 km) west of Sorbie. Recorded simply as Wood Hill on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, it once formed a great protrusion into the former Dowalton Loch, which was drained in the 19th C. This is part of an extensive drumlin field, with its principal axis aligned NE-SW indicating the direction of flow of an ancient ice sheet.
