Ring Hill

A modest hogback in The Machars of Galloway, Ring Hill rises to 47m (154 feet) at North Balfern, a mile (1.5 km) east southeast of Kirkinner. On its summit is a small Iron Age fort, oval in shape and defended by a pair of concentric ditches which give the hill its name. Ring Hill is one of a number of drumlins in this area, aligned NW-SE suggesting the direction of flow of an ancient ice sheet. There is another Ring Hill 12 miles (19 km) to the northwest.
