Penchrise Pen

A summit in the S of the Scottish Borders, Penchrise Pen rises to 439m (1440 feet) 2 miles (3 km) south southwest of Stobs Castle and 5 miles (8 km) south of Hawick. Its rocky summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar and was the site of an ancient hill-fort, settlement and enclosure, surrounded by ramparts and ditches. More recently, a First World War system of trenches was constructed on its northwestern slopes for training purposes, associated with the former military map at nearby Stobs. The annual Penchrise Pen Hill Race circles the summit and is organised by the Hawick-based athletics club Teviotdale Harriers.
