Gala Rig Racecourse

(Selkirk Race Course)

Selkirk or Gala Rig Race Course is located on Selkirk Common, 2 miles (3 km) southeast of the town. It is located on Smedheugh Farm, part of an area of land held in 'common good' for the people of Selkirk. Reputed to be the oldest in Scotland with racing probably taking place here from the 17th C., a new course was opened in 1824. Formal races at Selkirk seem to have ended in the 1870s and today there are no regular race meetings, although the course is used for races which form part of the Common Riding celebrations in June.
