Jenny Lind

A peripheral residential district of SW Glasgow, Jenny Lind lies between the M77 motorway and the boundary with East Renfrewshire, 1½ miles (2.5 km) north of Newton Mearns. Blocks of social housing were built on open fields here in the 1930s by Glasgow Corporation and the area took its name from the operatic soprano Johanna Maria (Jenny) Lind (1820-87), known as the Swedish nightingale, who is said to stayed here when she came to Scotland in 1847. Private housing was developed to the south in a series of phases from the 1980s. Jenny Lind Court was developed as a gated apartment community from 2011. Deaconsbank Golf Club and Rouken Glen Park lie to the east.
