Airdrie Railway Station

(An t-Àrd-Ruigh)

Airdrie Railway Station (known as Gaelic as An t-Àrd-Ruigh) lies on the North Clyde Line in North Lanarkshire. It is located just to the south of the town centre and a quarter-mile (0.5 km) northwest of Gartlea. There have been a plethora of railway stations in Airdrie over the years.

This station opened as Airdrie South on the Bathgate and Coatbridge Railway in 1862. However, the town's first station, known as Commonhead or Airdrie North, opened in 1840 but closed in 1930. Airdrie Hallcraig lay closer to the town centre and comprised a passenger station and a goods station, with associated sidings. There was another goods station, which also provided passenger services, at the termination of the Caledonian Railway's Airdrie and Newhouse branch on the south side of Graham Street.

This station became a terminus in 1956 when passenger services to Bathgate were withdrawn, although the line continued to be used for freight until 1982. Only seven years later the line east to Drumgelloch was relaid and passenger services now terminated there. In 2010, the Airdrie-Bathgate Railway opened allowing direct services to Edinburgh.

Airdrie Railway Station now operated by ScotRail. It is staffed full-time and is used by 1,086,244 passengers in the year 2009-10. It is preceded by Coatdyke, a mile (1.5 km) to the west, and followed by Drumgelloch Railway Station, 1¼ miles (2 km) to the east.
