Arbroath Railway Station (known as Obar Bhrothaig in Gaelic) lies on the East Coast Main Line, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) west of the town centre. This station opened on the Dundee & Arbroath Railway in 1848 but was rebuilt in 1911. The handsome sandstone station building features a glazed awning supported on cast-iron columns. It had three platforms; two through platforms and one on a loop line which served as a terminus for local trains from Dundee. This latter platform was taken out of use in 1990. Now operated by ScotRail, Arbroath Railway Station is staffed part-time and is used by around 393,310 passengers per annum (2009-10). It is preceded by Carnoustie Railway Station, 6 miles (10 km) to the southwest, and followed by Montrose, 12 miles (19 km) to the north northeast.
