Hartwood Railway Station

(Coille an Daimh)

A semi-rural halt on the Shotts Line in North Lanarkshire, Hartwood Railway Station (referred to as Coille an Daimh in Gaelic) is located a mile (1.5 km) northwest of Allanton and 1½ miles (2.5 km) west southwest of Shotts. This station opened in 1889 on the Caledonian Railway's Cleland & Midcalder Line, primarily to serve the Lanark District Asylum, which was being built adjacent. The station was built on a gentle curve and includes a small car park. Operated by ScotRail, Hartwood Railway Station is unstaffed and was used by around 15,000 passengers per annum (2017), representing a steady decline in numbers in recent years. It is preceded by Shotts Railway Station, 1½ miles (2.5 km) to the east northeast, and followed by Cleland, 2¾ miles (4.5 km) to the west.
