Lanark Railway Station

(Lannraig)

A terminal railway station in South Lanarkshire, Lanark (Gael: Lannraig) lies just to the east of the town centre and a mile (1.5 km) north northeast of New Lanark. It opened in 1855 at the end of a short (2½-mile / 4-km) branch from the Caledonian Railway, built by the Lanark Railway Co, but within five years that company had been taken over by the Caledonian and the line extended as the Carstairs, Lanark and Douglas Branch which was later connected to the Glasgow & South Western Railway Company's lines in Ayrshire.

The longer branch closed in the 1960s, the result of Dr. Beeching's railway rationalisation, and Lanark is again at the end of a short single-track branch from the West Coast Main Line, designated as part of the Argyle Line network. It is followed by Carluke Railway Station, 5 miles (8 km) to the northwest.

Lanark Railway Station is operated by ScotRail, is staffed part-time and is used by 328,890 passengers per annum (2014-15).
