Sanquhar Railway Station (Gael: Seanchair) lies on the Glasgow South Western Line and is located on the northern edge of the village, a quarter-mile (0.4 km) north of the centre, in Dumfries and Galloway. It opened in 1850 on the Glasgow, Dumfries & Carlisle Railway, which within months merged to form the Glasgow and South Western Railway. The station closed in 1965, a victim of railway rationalisation, but the line remained open and the station re-opened on 27th June 1994. It now comprises two platforms with utilitarian passenger shelters. The original station building remains extant, but has been sold and is now let as self-catering holiday accommodation. Now operated by ScotRail, Sanquhar Station is unstaffed and is used by 27,472 passengers per annum (2015). It is preceded by Dumfries Railway Station, 24 miles (39 km) to the south southeast, and followed by Kirkconnel, 3 miles (5 km) to the west northwest.
