Shieldmuir Railway Station (referred to as Monadh a' Bhuith in Gaelic) lies on the West Coast Main Line in North Lanarkshire, but only Argyle Line commuter services stop here. It is located between Shieldmuir and Craigneuk, 1½ miles (2.5 km) southeast of Motherwell town centre. This station opened in 1990, comprises two platforms and is now operated by ScotRail. It is unstaffed and is used by around 114,000 passengers per annum (2016-17) which represents a sustained year-on-year increase from 48,882 in 2009-10.
Shieldmuir is preceded by Motherwell Railway Station, 2 miles (3 km) to the northwest, and followed by Wishaw, 1¼ miles (2 km) to the east southeast. Royal Mail's Scottish Distribution Centre is located a quarter-mile (0.5 km) southeast of the station. This represents the northern terminus of their rail distribution system.
