An elevated residential suburb of Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire, Cliftonville lies a half-mile (1 km) east of the town centre. The area was laid out as public housing on the policies of Cliftonhill House (now demolished, but once the property of the Bairds of Gartsherrie) from the 1930s and the name evolved into Cliftonville. Private housing was added in the later 20th C. and many of the original flatted-blocks have been sold under right-to-buy legislation. Yet, three massive tower blocks (Dunbeth Court, High Coats and Jackson Court) located here were named as some of the most deprived communities in Scotland in 2016, despite refurbishment in 1997. The home to Albion Rover Football Club, Cliftonhill Stadium, lies to the south of the area, while Coatdyke Railway Station is situated to the north.
